Social
Media in Website Advertising
Understanding
Social Media as a Tool
Of course, everyone
knows about social media and all the buzz about how it is
great for advertising. What most people don't think about
is that none of this is new.
From the early days of
the 600 billion dollar AOL chats to the 3 billion dollar
pages of MYSpace people have been engaged in social media
as long as the Internet has been open.
Of course where they
are socializing and what they socialize about changes
daily. One day its twitter, the next it is facebook, then
pintrest, then on to instagram or whatever is hot this
week.
So knowing where your
market is and how to use those resources is the key to
making the most out of your time and money.

What People Don't
Understand About Social Media Advertising
What most people don't
understand is the enormous cost of creating and executing a
social media campaign.
The main thing people need to
remember is that it is "SOCIAL", and that involves
socializing with individuals and or groups. All of that takes
time and lots of it, Time costs money and even if we pay one
social media marketer $10 a hour to execute your campaign the
cost will be no less than $2000 a month.
To make social media work, you
have to engage people, interact with them and there is no way to
automate that and make it cheaper to run.
The
reason 90% of the Facebook accounts for businesses never
yeilded any results is because of the lack of personal
interaction they had with potential customers.
Social Media is not about
posting ads to millions of people, it is about the one on one
personal interaction that it allows. Making it more powerful and
effective, but not necessarily cheaper than other mediums of
advertising.
What you would essentially do
is hire a bunch of full time sales people and have them go out
and promote your product.
Rather then sending those
people out to events, locations or promotions you can reach
people online in masses, but still just like setting up a booth
at a trade show, ultimately, the sale is one to one.
It is a powerful medium, but
one out of the budget of most small business owners. One that can
really propel a product to the next level if managed well and in
some cases, business owners have the extra time and help from
family and friends to create a monster campaign.
But as you transition those
hundreds of hours given freely by friends and family into paid
employees, the cost go up drastically.
So social media is just not
for everyone as many people learned the hard way.
Using Social Media
Effectively
If you have the time you can
use social media effectively as an advertising tool. But that
requires a great amount of effort and most business owners do not
have the time, money or desire to spend 15 hours a day twittering,
facebooking or pintresting.
We can never stress enough how
much time you really need to spend on those types of things just
like anything else, you get back what you put in. Whether it is
the tie you take building your website or time socializing on
facebook.
Look at it like this:
You spend 2 hours
chatting on Facebook and convince one person to buy your
product.
To get 2 people
you need to spend 4 hours.
To get 10 people
you need to spend 20 hours.
And so on and on....
Now, if you convince those
people to go and tell one friend to also buy the product, then
the sales can be exponential and in some cases, the campaign
takes on a life of its own.
Now, I said, some cases.
Just like VIRAL videos,
despite multi million dollar advertising companies making
thousands of videos and posting them, marketing them and
promoting them, most never amount to anything.
Then some video of a cat
crawling out of a box gets 10 million hits. Go figure!
There is an element of luck
involved. Some things hit people just right and get moving on
their own.
The same is true of TV shows,
despite all the research, planning and expense, one pilot after
another is canceled because it just did not have the interest
that was expected.
So even the best laid plans
can see less than beneficial results. It is a huge gamble like
any other medium, but when it hits, it really hits and can make
millionaires out of tiny little businesses.
Your Social Media
Campaign
If you want to spend the money,
we can do it for you. If you don't, we can advise you on how to
do it yourself.
In either case, be prepared to
immerse yourself in hundreds of hours of work to get it going.
Having a simple facebook page,
a twitter account are totally worthless and a waste of time if
you don't back them up with strong marketing and social
interaction.
We can certainly guide you on
the journey ad tell you what has worked and what has not so you
don't have to make the same mistakes everyone else did. And with
a little bit of luck, you might just hit it big.
